YEAR’S EVENT – EXHIBITION ‘THE EXPERIENCE OF EXILE’ IN STAR SUMMER PALACE

The exhibition ‘THE EXPERIENCE OF EXILE/ THE DESTINIES OF EXILES FROM THE TERRITORY OF THE FORMER RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN INTERWAR CZECHOSLOVAKIA’ is on view in the Star Summer Palace from June 16th to October 29th.
It has been the MCL biggest exhibition projects of this year. The exhibition touches on today’s burning subject: migration and exile. It provides a look at the history of the First Republic, which would be - after the revolutionary events in Russia (a hundred years ago) - one of the most searched-for destinations for people fleeing from horrors of the Civil War and the persecution from the Bolshevik power. Czechoslovakia had lent these people overwhelming support even when considered internationally, which enabled exiles to live a respectable life, to study or to follow up their professional career. It was predominantly Prague that became the most important centre of the cultural and scientific lives of Russian, Ukraine and Belorussian immigrants. The exhibition has been arranged by a team of professionals, such as historians, Slavicists or specialists in art, theatre or film history. It aims to chart the interwar immigration from the former Russian empire from many angles of view, and to encourage the awareness of this subject among the wider cultural public. It also opens themes, which has been beyond the professional interest, mostly the immigrants’ engagement in scientific and natural or technical branches, or in the sphere of theatre and film production. The exhibition is co-organized by the Museum of Czech Literature together with the Institute of Slavonic Studies, Czech Academy of Sciences; the National Gallery in Prague; and the National Film Archive
